Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy

Evidence, clinical practice and autonomy for those who rehabilitate and those who live the journey

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy® is a rehabilitation technique based on behavioral approaches for individuals with asymmetric limb use.

Through task-oriented therapy combined with behavioral methods applied intensively and repetitively, CIMT aims to increase and improve the use of the most affected limb.

With 3 hours of daily training over a period of two to three consecutive weeks, it promotes clinical improvement by overcoming learned non-use and encouraging use-dependent cortical reorganization.

Today, it is one of the most evidence-based techniques in neurofunctional physical therapy and occupational therapy.

CIMT Training

The CIMT training offered by Grupo Contensão Induzida is certified as an extension course by the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar-SP) with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

Why “Contensão” with an “S”?

"Contensão" with an "S" symbolizes the great effort required to overcome a challenge. This term was introduced by Ms. Isabella Menezes in 2005, during her master's degree at UNIFESP-SP. The term was later approved by the University of Alabama (USA) research group, becoming the name of our organization and, eventually, our registered brand: Contensão Induzida – Rehabilitation Therapy®.

Research and Publications

In recent years, we have participated in research projects in collaboration with leading national and international universities: UAB-USA, UFSCar-SP, UDESC-SC, and UFMG-MG.

Discover the

Protocols in Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

Our protocols are course-based and grounded in solid scientific evidence. They are adapted for different patient profiles and structured to ensure that physical and occupational therapists can work safely, predictably, and with real impact on functionality.

Each protocol is validated in clinical settings, with supervised practice and real case applications in both adult and pediatric patients. These programs offer professionals the opportunity to apply the technique ethically and effectively from the very start of training.

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy for Upper Limb in Adults

Comprehensive training in the application of CIMT for upper limb rehabilitation in adults with post-stroke hemiparesis or other neurological conditions. Grounded in scientific evidence and international guidelines, the course covers criteria for patient selection, functional assessment, prescription, and monitoring of intensive interventions.

Key Topics:
- CIMT foundations: principles, scientific evidence, and clinical adaptations
- Standardized assessments and task selection based on functional goals
- Structuring the intensive protocol (original and adapted)
- Engagement strategies and patient adherence
- Remote monitoring and use of digital tools (CIMT Mobile)
- Case studies and clinical discussions

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy for Upper Limb in Children

An innovative course with theoretical and practical foundations in applying CIMT for lower limb rehabilitation, focusing on functional mobility in post-stroke adults. Covers intensive task-oriented strategies, functional gait training, and personalized motor challenge planning.

Key Topics:
- CIMT principles adapted for lower limbs
- Task-oriented therapy applied to gait and functional mobility
- Use of digital tools (CIMT Mobile) for engagement and monitoring
- Perception of challenge and individualization of tasks
- Movement analysis and task progression
- Clinical protocols and practical experiences

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy for Lower Limb in Adults

Designed for physical and occupational therapists, this course trains professionals in the application of CIMT for children with cerebral palsy and other conditions that affect upper limb function. The approach is family-centered, with meaningful, real-life activities tailored to each child’s reality.

Key Topics:
- Scientific evidence in pediatric CIMT
- Functional goal setting and child-specific assessments
- Playful adaptations of tasks and caregiver involvement
- Structuring the camp-based or home-based protocol
- Practical strategies for engagement and intensive early intervention
- Case studies, videos, and knowledge sharing with experienced clinicians

About Us

A purpose that started with two professionals and now impacts lives across Brazil.

Contensão Induzida was born from the meeting of two passions: the science of movement and a genuine desire to transform care into something more human, effective, and accessible.

We were the pioneering group in bringing the Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) to Brazil. Back in 2005, when it was still all about research, experimentation, and validation efforts, they believed in it. even when hardly anyone knew about the technique.

Since then, we have built a solid trajectory, training hundreds of professionals and closely following stories of civilizational recovery that resulted in a simple gesture: not giving up on each person’s functional potential.

More than a method, CIMT became a mission.
More than a course, it became a network.
More than a technique, it became a registered brand.
With an “S” of science, of strength, of meaning.

Today, Contensão Induzida is a national reference in neurological rehabilitation — and continues to be, at its core, what it has always been:

A movement of care.
Of science with soul.
Of those who believe in what they do — and do it from the heart.
